Georgia Benefits for Disabled Veterans by VA Rating

Georgia's benefits for disabled veterans come in steps. Any service-connected rating opens a park discount, 10% brings local business tax relief and hiring points, and 100% or TDIU unlocks the big homestead and vehicle exemptions.

Key takeaways

  1. Any rating: 25% off park entry. With a GDVS discount card.

  2. 10%: business tax relief. Ten years free of local occupation taxes.

  3. 70%: state home fee paid. VA covers the daily fee.

  4. 100% or TDIU: $126,526 homestead exemption. Plus free plates and vehicle tax relief.

VA rates disabilities in 10% steps, and each Georgia agency picks its own threshold. Lining them up shows what changes when a rating goes up1.

Federal compensation is the same in every state; see VA’s current rate tables2. The Georgia Department of Veterans Service publishes the state list every year in its resource guide3.

Any rating to 40%

State park discount

A Georgia veteran with a discharge under honorable conditions and any VA service-connected rating gets 25% off entrance fees at state parks, historic sites and recreation areas. Bring your DD-214, proof of the rating and proof of residency to a GDVS field office; the card is mailed after approval3.

Business tax relief at 10%

At 10% or more with an honorable discharge, a veteran can get a certificate exempting them for ten years from local occupation taxes and regulatory fees for running a business or practicing a profession. Take ID, your DD-214, a current VA summary of benefits letter and VS Form 40-025 to the county probate court3.

State hiring points

Veterans rated 10% or more get a 10-point credit when applying for State of Georgia jobs, compared with 5 points for other wartime veterans3.

Permanent and total ratings

A veteran with a permanent and total disability rating from VA or another government agency can buy a three-year resident disability sportsman’s license for $18, including the transaction fee, after Wildlife Resources approves a one-time disability certification at gooutdoorsgeorgia.com53. Totally blind residents can get a free lifetime honorary fishing license3.

70% and above

At 70%, or when admission is due to a service-connected condition, VA pays the full daily fee at the Milledgeville and Augusta war veterans homes6. See Georgia’s state veterans homes. A 70% rating is also the threshold for VA’s family caregiver program; see the VA caregiver stipend in Georgia7.

100% and individual unemployability

Homestead exemption

Veterans rated 100% permanent and total, paid at 100% for individual unemployability, or receiving a statutory award for loss or loss of use of a hand or foot, or loss of sight, qualify for Georgia’s disabled veteran homestead exemption: $126,526 off assessed value for 2026, from state, county, municipal and school taxes34. Details: Georgia’s property tax exemption.

Plates and vehicle tax

The same groups can get Disabled Veteran license plates for up to two vehicles, with no registration, manufacturing or annual fee on the first set; plates also let the veteran park in accessible spaces and ask for full-service fuel at the self-service price. Veterans rated 100% permanent and total, and those with the listed statutory awards, are exempt from ad valorem tax on one vehicle, and since 2024 that no longer requires the special plate3. The Department of Revenue’s Special Tag Unit is at 404-968-38803.

Adapted vehicles

A disabled veteran who receives VA’s grant to buy and adapt a vehicle doesn’t pay state sales tax on that vehicle3.

Ratings between tiers and TDIU

Georgia doesn’t prorate. A 90% rating qualifies for the 10% benefits but not the homestead exemption, unless VA pays at the 100% rate for individual unemployability, which Georgia counts for the homestead exemption and plates3. The vehicle tax language is narrower, so a TDIU veteran should confirm with the county tag office before relying on it3.

Spouses, children and after a death

The homestead exemption continues for an unremarried surviving spouse or minor children who keep living in the home8. Disabled Veteran plates can stay on a vehicle previously registered to the veteran for an unremarried surviving spouse or minor child3. A spouse of a veteran whose disabilities prevent driving, or an unremarried surviving spouse, can get a free honorary driver’s license through a GDVS field office, and spouses of disabled veterans who can’t work because of the disability get the 10-point state hiring credit3.

Proving your rating

Most Georgia offices want a current VA benefit summary letter. Download it from VA.gov or call 800-827-100093; see getting your VA benefit summary letter. GDVS can verify eligibility, but you file each application yourself3.

A Georgia example

A 58-year-old Navy veteran in Valdosta is rated 80%. She gets the park discount card and the ten-year business certificate for her bookkeeping practice. When VA grants individual unemployability, she files for the homestead exemption with Lowndes County and orders Disabled Veteran plates, then checks with the tag office about the vehicle tax34.
