Most are in the big metros. Burlington, Essex Junction, White River Junction, Berlin and Bradford have the most communities, and every city in Vermont is listed further down the page.1

Paying for care

Paying for assisted living in Vermont

Our guide to how families pay for assisted living goes deeper on each option below.

Private pay options

Most families pay privately at first, from income, savings, a home sale or a reverse mortgage. Long-term care insurance can help if the policy covers assisted living, so check the daily benefit, the waiting (elimination) period and what counts as a qualifying need. Care costs for someone who is chronically ill and on a plan of care may be tax-deductible above 7.5% of adjusted gross income.2

VA benefits

Wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities may qualify for the VA pension with Aid and Attendance, which can go toward assisted living.

Medicare

Medicare does not pay for long-term stays or for room and board in assisted living.3 It still covers medically necessary care while your loved one lives there, such as doctor visits, hospital care, home health, hospice and prescriptions.3
